Postgraduate students - courses we do and do not support

The following links take you to the relevant section of this page.

Full-time 1 year courses we support under the Postgraduate Students' Allowances Scheme (PSAS)

List of allocated funded places 2009-2010

Under the terms of the PSAS, we offer a limited number of discretionary awards to eligible students for one full-time course of professional or vocational training, mostly at diploma level.

Not all postgraduate diploma level courses in the UK are included in the scheme and it does not normally cover those which are:

  • open to students who are not graduates;
  • not approved by a UK university or the Open University;
  • outside Scotland where a similar course is available in Scotland.

Courses at masters or doctorate level are the responsibility of one of the research councils.

If you are studying a postgraduate course that we do not support, or are studying on a part-time or distance-learning basis and you have a disability or learning difficulty and need extra support while on your course, you may be eligible to apply for the Disabled Students' Allowance.

Full-time 2 year courses we support under the Postgraduate Students' Allowances Scheme (PSAS)

Most eligible funded courses are of one year’s duration. However, there are a small number of two year postgraduate courses that attract funded places. Please check the institution list to find out if your university gets a funded place for a two year course. In 2009-2010, the funded place for any new eligible student will cover payment of tuition fees (up to £3,400) and living cost support, if applicable.

However, from 2010-2011 the funded place for year 2 of the course will only extend to payment of tuition fees up to the agreed flat rate fee. No decision has been made on the funding available for new students in 2010-2011 who commence a two year postgraduate qualification. Eligible students who complete the two year course in 2009-2010 will continue to be entitled to apply for full support, providing of course, they are nominated for a funded place.

Part-time courses we support under the Postgraduate Students' Allowances Scheme (PSAS)

For the first time, funding for postgraduate students, currently limited to those on full-time courses, will be extended to up to 150 part-time students on a pilot basis during session 2009-2010.

This will cover funding for tuition fees and be targeted on a pilot group of institutions and a small number of subject areas, linked to the Scottish Government’s economic priority sectors, including energy, life sciences, tourism, food and drink industries, financial and business services, creative industries and education.

The institutions who were successful in their bids to have places funded through the Scottish Government’s new pilot scheme for this student group are - UHI Millennium, Robert Gordon, Aberdeen, Abertay, Heriot-Watt, Edinburgh Napier, Strathclyde, West of Scotland and at Dundee and Stirling, through a joint project. Nineteen courses – six new and 13 existing, will be funded through the scheme.

If your university and course is selected for the pilot scheme then you may be eligible to receive help with the cost of your tuition fees over the two years (2009-2010 and 2010-2011) it takes you to complete your qualification. The level of tuition fees will be £3400 split over the two years of your course.

Application forms for funding will only be available through your university.

Students who are not selected for one of the 150 funded places, may still be eligible to apply through the ILA Scotland scheme for help with the cost of their tuition fees of up to £500 per year. Further information on this fee grant is available in our part-time section.

Second courses which qualify for support at undergraduate level

If you are doing one of the courses listed below and you meet our residence conditions, you can apply for the same level of support as you received for your undergraduate course. You should also apply online as an undergraduate student in order to receive the correct support. Please contact us for more advice on the following.

  • Certain postgraduate architecture diplomas in any part of the UK following a degree course in architecture. (This does not apply to postgraduate MA courses in architecture, as all of these are in England and Wales.)
  • A one year course leading to membership of the Institute of Linguistics at Aberdeen College of Further Education following an associate membership course.
  • The Maths Tripos (Part III) at Cambridge University .
  • Graduateships and memberships of the Institute of Chemistry .
  • Bachelor of Divinity when this is taken as a second degree, and certain courses leading to the ministry. (Students must be genuine candidates for the ministry of a recognised church or religious body if they have already received support from public funds.)
  • Professional Graduate Diploma in Education or a Postgraduate Diploma in Community Education. If you are taking a Postgraduate Diploma in Community Education although you apply for support as an undergraduate student your college or university must nominate you for a funded place.
