The PGDE and PGDipCE

The following links take you to the relevant section of this page.

The Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)

If you are taking a PGDE, the support arrangements will be the same as for an undergraduate course.

If you are studying in Scotland this will be tuition fees and a student loan. You may also be entitled to a bursary and any supplementary grants that apply to you.

If you are studying at a UK institution outside Scotland, you can apply for a loan to pay your fees and a student loan for living costs. You may also be entitled to a bursary and any supplementary grants that apply to you.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Community Education (PGDipCE)

If you are taking a PGDipCE, although you apply for the same living cost support as an undergraduate student, your college or university must first nominate you for a funded place.

If you are studying in Scotland and you are nominated for a funded place your support will include tuition fees and a student loan. You may also be entitled to a bursary and any supplementary grants that apply to you.

How to apply

For both the PGDE and the PGDipCE you should apply online as an undergraduate student and not a postgraduate student. This will ensure you receive the correct level of support.

How previous study affects your support for a PGDE

If you have previously studied at postgraduate level, with or without support from UK public funds, or your first degree, funded from UK public funds, qualifies you with a profession (for example, accountancy, architecture, engineering, medicine, nursing, ministers of religion and priests, physiotherapy or podiatry) the following applies.

If you are studying a PGDE in Scotland, we will not normally pay the full fee of £1,820 or give you a bursary. However, we will pay £535 towards your fees. You can also get a student loan and any supplementary grants that apply to you.

If you are studying the PGDE at a UK institution outside Scotland, we will not normally give you a loan to pay your fees or give you a bursary. However, you can apply for a student loan for your living costs and any supplementary grants that apply to you.

How previous study affects your support for a PGDipCE

If you have previously taken a postgraduate course, including teacher training, with support from UK public funds, we will not normally give you funding for a PGDipCE.

If you are studying a PGDipCE in Scotland, the tuition fees are normally much higher then the standard £1,820. We will not pay any amount towards your tuition fees and you should check with your institution how much these fees will be.

For both the PGDE and PGDipCE we do not take into account any postgraduate course you have done which qualifies for an advance research-level award, such as a PhD.

PGDE Priority Subjects

If you want to do a Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) in a priority subject, as well as your student loan and supplementary grants, we will pay your fees and bursary no matter what your previous qualification is. The priority subjects for session 2009-2010 are biology, business education, chemistry, English, Gaelic, geography, history, home economics, maths, modern languages (French, German, Italian, Spanish and Chinese), physical education, physics, religious education, technological education and primary (all courses including Gaelic medium).
